Colleagues in India (Dr Anil Rane and Dr Abhijit Nadkarni) are currently collaborating with the Alcohol, Drugs and the Family Group UK in undertaking a study of the impact of serious alcohol problems on family life in Goa.

Dependent drinkers who are admitted onto a detoxification ward and a close relative who looks after the drinker while they are on the ward, both complete a number of quantitative measures, and the relative is also interviewed about impact, symptoms, coping and support.  Preliminary analysis of the first interviews is underway.  Separately, a major study in Goa of the use of lay counsellors to help people with alcohol (or depression) problems (PREMIUM: http://www.sangath.com/details.php?nav_id=123) is also collecting data on the involvement of a significant other in the counselling, and its effect on outcome.
