Colleagues in Italy (led by Professor Caterina Arcidiacono) collaborated with the Alcohol, Drugs and the Family Group UK over the period from 2000-2010. First we undertook a 3-region investigation into the impact of substance problems on family life, looking at families in the south (Napoli), centre (Roma) and north (Bologna).

This was followed by an investigation into whether (and if so, how well) the 5-Step method would work in Italy (the study worked with families from the Napoli area). Both projects have been written up in a series of papers (eg Arcidiacono C., Velleman R., Procentese F., Berti P., Albanesi  C., Sommantico M., Copello A. (2010) Italian Families living with relatives with alcohol or drugs problems. Drugs: Education, Prevention and Policy, 17(6), 659-680; Velleman, R., Arcidiacono, C., Procentese, F. Copello, A. and Sarnacchiaro, P. (2008) A 5-Step intervention to help family members in Italy who live with substance misusers. Journal of Mental Health, 17 (6), 643-655) and a book:  Arcidiacono, C., Velleman, R. Procentese, F., Albanese, C. (Eds) (2009) Famiglie Sotto Stress: Con-vivere Con Chi Abusa di Alcol e Droga. Milano, Italy: Edizioni Unicopli. Pp 246; 978-88-400-1344-1..  Reports are available to AFINet members.
